Book Review: Whispers of Lore – By Casey Quinn
Published By Casey Quinn • Oct 5th, 2008 • Category: Short Story NewsWhispers of Lore is a fantasy story written by D.R. Polsz that takes the reader on a constant, action driven fairy tale though the adventures of the main character, Dack. The story starts with momentum from the first chapter, where the reader gets into the action and understands the drama immediately. This aggressive pace does not let down throughout the fifteen chapter book. Polsz does not waste time with explaining why things are the way they are, instead lets the reader discover the world he has created on the island as the story progresses.
A well written story, Whispers of Lore covers a great amount of distance within its short, 188 pages. Dack’s Way, the first in the Whisper of Lore series does a good job of building a world of conflict where issues of loyalties, power and division have divided a nation leaving the main character with tasks to resolve the past. While constant action made each page turn faster than the previous, there were a few random and perhaps unneeded coincidences (reoccurring horse) and perhaps a few bad attempts at humor (gems falling out of the kings scepter) but overall a good tale for young adults (there is no swearing, graphic violence) or those who are looking for an innocent fantasy adventure.
The plot overall is a simple one in that it involves conflicts from different fractions of the nation that are being resolved by the main character. The conflicts are always resolved without too much struggle or minimum action sequences within the book. With this first part of the series, the storyline was somewhat expected, as was the sequence of events unfolding. Since “Dack’s Way” is a building block fo the future, D.R. Polsz does a good job of setting the stage for an epic adventure. Dack’s Way follows the philosophy of it’s not the destination, but the adventure that makes a good story.
Near the end of the book, a number of conflicts collide that had been building along the way for a very nice ending which does leave the reader wanting more and awaiting to buy the second of the series to see what happens next to Dack. It was a very enjoyable read, well worth the money and the time.
